Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question about Brand Match? You'll find answers to the most frequently asked questions. Terms and conditions apply.

1. What is Sainsbury's Brand Match?

Sainsbury's Brand Match is a guarantee that if you could have paid less foran identical basket of branded products (same size, flavour, colour etc) at Tesco or Asda, we will give you a coupon at the till for the difference, at the end of that transaction.

The value of the coupon we give will be the difference between the Sainsbury's price for your basket and the cheapest price in Tesco or Asda for an identical basket bought on the same day.

You can then use the coupon on your next shop within the next 14 days.

For information on how to qualify, see Question 2.

2. How do I qualify for a Sainsbury's Brand Match coupon?

You need to spend £20 or more in one transaction in a main supermarket and buy at least one branded product that is exactly the same (e.g. the same size, the same flavour, variety or colour) to the branded product on sale in Tesco or Asda. This is called a 'Comparable branded product' in our terms and conditions. For information on comparable branded products, see Question 7).

You must be shopping at a main or self-scan checkout in a supermarket in order to qualify for Sainsbury's Brand Match. (Some exclusions apply - see terms and conditions).

3. How does Sainsbury's Brand Match work?

Our till technology will calculate how much all the comparable branded products (Kellogg's, Ariel, Coca Cola etc) in your shop cost in total. It will then calculate how much exactly the same products would have cost in Tesco and Asda (using the prices listed on their websites) if you bought them on the same day.

If the products would have been cheaper in either Tesco or Asda we will give you a coupon back for the difference at the end of your shop. If both Tesco and Asda would have been cheaper we will give you a coupon for the difference between what you paid and the cheapest competitor. When our prices are cheaper than or the same as both Tesco and  Asda, we will not give you a coupon for money off your shop.

We take into account comparable lines where Sainsbury's are cheaper than Tesco and Asda and where Sainsbury's are more expensive than Tesco and Asda.

Please see an example comparison below:

This example is for illustrative purposes only. Prices will vary over time. Sainsbury's Brand Match comparison will be calculated daily using up-to-date information.

4. How do you check Tesco and Asda prices?

We collect prices by running a daily web scan of the Tesco and Asda grocery shopping websites using independent data provided by brandview.com. These prices are sent to all participating main supermarket stores every day, so we can compare prices using Sainsbury's Brand Match technology.

5. How do I check that Sainsbury's price comparison is correct?

We're confident that the information provided by our independent data provider brandview.com (which is used to calculate the Brand Match coupon is accurate). You can check the Brand Match calculation we made on your shopping on our Brand Match website. By entering your receipt details, or logging in with your Nectar card details, you can view the breakdown of the branded products you purchased, and how their prices compared to the prices at Tesco and Asda.

If you still have questions about it, you can call our Careline from 9am the day after you did your shop.

Make sure you have your receipt with you when you call - we'll need the information on it to check the details of your shop.

Our Careline team are available on 0800 63 62 62 from 8am to 7pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

6. What are branded products?

Branded products are products that do not have Sainsbury's name on them. Branded products include products such as Kellogg's Cornflakes, Ariel, and Coca Cola. Products bought from the deli, meat and fish counters or the Food To Go counter are treated as Sainsbury's own brand and are not comparable products.

For products not included in Brand Match see Question 8.

7. What are the comparable branded products?

Comparable branded products are those branded products that are identical to one another.  Any differences including, but not limited to, pack size, colour, variety or flavour mean that items are non-comparable and therefore will not qualify for Sainsbury's Brand Match.

8. Are all branded products included?

No. Products in the following categories are not included in Sainsbury's Brand Match:

  • all electrical items including electrical health and beauty e.g. hair straighteners electric toothbrushes, hair dryers
  • batteries
  • home ware e.g. Cookshop, crockery, cutlery, glassware
  • kitchen plastics e.g. food storage boxes
  • greetings cards
  • BBQ and picnic accessories
  • home furnishings e.g. bedding, cushions, lighting,  garden products and furniture
  • entertainment e.g. CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, computer games, books
  • hardware e.g. car care, DIY, cycle accessories
  • sports equipment
  • clothing including socks and hosiery
  • items from the kiosk including tobacco and cigarettes
  • jewellery
  • prescription medicines from the Pharmacy, non medicine items bought from the Pharmacy such as diabetes and blood pressure kits, travel plugs, travel irons
  • reading glasses and sunglasses
  • fuel
  • photo-processing,
  • in store concessions (e.g.Clarks)
  • items bought in the café
  • mobile phones and e-top up cards
  • ink cartridges
  • toys
  • luggage
  • stationery

9. Why are only branded products included?

It is very difficult to assess which own label products are comparable with those sold by a competitor.

For example, we only sell Fairtrade bananas and other retailers sell non-Fairtrade bananas. Therefore bananas are not comparable between retailers.

Sainsbury's Little Ones Eco Baby Wipes (72) vs. Asda Little Angel Cotton Soft Baby Wipes (80) are not comparable because there are more wipes in the Asda pack and Sainsbury's wipes are biodegradable and Asda's are not.

10. Why is there a minimum spend requirement of £20?

Sainsbury's Brand Match is a guarantee that if you could have bought an identical basket of branded goods more cheaply in Tesco or Asda, we will give you a coupon at the till for the difference, there and then, at the end of that transaction. Because Brand Match is about comparing baskets of branded products, that's why we've set a minimum spend of £20 so that there will be, in most circumstances, a number of branded products in the basket to compare.

11. Does Sainsbury's Brand Match include offers at Tesco and Asda?

Yes. We compare the prices of all comparable branded products (except those in the excluded categories) with Tesco and Asda, even if the products are on deal there.

For branded products to be matched to the promotional price in Tesco or Asda you must have bought the correct number of qualifying products.

E.g. if Coca Cola is on Buy One Get One Free in Asda then in order for our Sainsbury's Brand Match technology to compare the current Sainsbury's price with Asda's promotional price, then you need to have bought two bottles or more in Sainsbury's.

If you only bought one bottle in Sainsbury's then the technology will only compare to the single unit price in Asda.

The variant (e.g. size, colour, flavour or variety) bought in Sainsbury's needs to be on sale in Tesco and/or Asda for the promotion to be matched.

12. Which promotions are excluded?

Although many promotions are included, we have to exclude the follwing promotions due to system limitations, because they include supermarket own-label lines or size of the product varies and therefore isn't comparable:

  • Any promotion that includes Tesco or Asda own-label lines,
  • Any promotion that applies to a whole shop at Tesco or Asda, e.g. £5 off if you spend £30,
  • Any % extra free promotions (as these are considered non-comparable items),
  • Bonus loyalty points promotions,
  • Petrol promotions (spend £X and get Xp off per litre of fuel purchased),
  • 'Purchase X for a free product' offers e.g. 'Buy Quakers Oats and receive a free bowl'.

Further details are given in the terms and conditions which can be found either at the Customer Service Desk or on line at www.sainsburys.co.uk/brandmatch.

13. Do you match against store specific discounts at Tesco or Asda?

No. We match Sainsbury's prices and deals to prices and deals collected from tesco.com and asda.co.uk for comparable branded products.

In our Scottish stores we will match the Scottish prices and promotions on tesco.com and asda.co.uk on beers, wines and spirits.

14. Why is my shop not eligible for Brand Match?

Your shop was not eligible, because it did not qualify for Brand Match for one of the following reasons:

  • You did not spend £20 or more in one transaction
  • The supermarket you used was not participating in Brand Match - see Question 17
  • You did not purchase one comparable branded product -see Question 7
  • Your shop was made online - see Question 20.

15. Why don't you just reduce your prices or increase the amount of offers you have?

Prices and deals change daily in supermarkets, and most of our stores sell 10,000+ different products, which makes it very difficult to change our prices and deals to match our competitors on the same day.

By offering customers the difference back using coupon at the till, it means that we can make sure we are giving you great prices on your branded goods.

16. Why aren't you matching against Morrisons branded prices and deals?

Morrisons do not display all of their prices and deals online, therefore we are unable to collect them on a daily basis, and unable to include them in Sainsbury's Brand Match.

17. Which stores issue Brand Match coupons?

Brand Match coupons will be issued in all main stores with the exception of:

  • Holborn (London)
  • Tottenham Court Road (London)
  • Warren Street (London)
  • Mayfair (London)
  • St Andrews Square (Edinburgh)

  • Birchfield Road (Manchester)
  • Gorseinon (Swansea)

Our convenience stores don't have the technology necessary to operate Brand Match.

19. Why don't I get a coupon if I shop at the Kiosk/Petrol station/Customer Service Desk/Cafe?

In the vast majority of our kiosks, petrol stations, cafes or at our Customer Service Desks we don't have coupon at Till printers, so cannot offer Sainsbury's Brand Match coupons when you shop there.

20. Why is this not available when shopping online, when it is with Tesco and Asda?

There are currently technical limitations which prevent us from being able to offer Sainsbury's Brand Match to our online grocery customers. We understand how frustrating this is for online customers and we are looking in to solutions.

21. Is there a maximum Sainsbury's Brand Match coupon value?

Yes. The highest value Sainsbury's Brand Match coupon you can receive is £10. We are confident that very few, if any, customers will purchase branded products that in total are more than £10 more expensive at Sainsbury's than at Tesco or Asda).

22. Where can I spend my Sainsbury's Brand Match coupon?

You can redeem your coupon(s) in any of our stores, including Convenience and for non-fuel purchases in our petrol stations. The coupon can also be used for over the counter medication but not on prescriptions.

23. Where can't I spend my Sainsbury's Brand Match coupon?

You cannot redeem your coupons on fuel, Online, Café/Restaurants, concessions e.g.Clarks, or in our Pharmacies if you are paying for a prescription.

24. How long do I have to spend my Sainsbury's Brand Match coupon?

Your coupon will be valid for 14 days. The 'valid until' date is printed on your Coupon. After this date the coupon expires and cannot be used.

25. What is the maximum number of items I can buy of one product and still qualify for Sainsbury's Brand Match coupons?

In order to ensure that everyone is given an opportunity to buy branded items and we don't run out, Sainsbury's Brand Match coupons will only be issued to the first 10 purchases made of identical items. Where a promotional item is limited to X per customer that will be the maximum number we will include in Sainsbury's Brand Match. Please remember the maximum value of a coupon you can receive is £10 (see Question 21).

25a. My Sainsbury's Brand Match Coupon is for less then I was expecting

Our technology adds up the total cost of your branded shop at Tesco and Asda and compares that total with the cost of the products bought sat Sainsbury's. This process which takes into account comparable branded products which were cheaper at Sainsbury's may mean that you get a coupon for less than you were expecting, See Question 8 for further details of how our Brand match technology works.

26. Can I use Sainsbury's Brand Match coupons at the same time as other coupons?

Yes. More than one Sainsbury's Brand Match coupon can be used at once provided both coupons do not have the exact same value and are in date. For example, you can use a coupon for £1.10 and another for 30p at the same time but you can't use two coupons for 30p at the same time.

27. Why can't I use two Sainsbury's Brand Match coupons of the same value?

This is a technical limitation of our till system.

28. Can I redeem my Sainsbury's Brand Match coupon for cash?

  • if you used more than one Sainsbury's Brand Match coupon of exactly the same value (see Question 27)

33. Why haven't I received a Sainsbury's Brand Match coupon with money off my next shop but the person in front of me at the checkout did?
