Sustainable Fishing

Plenty more fish in the sea? According to a 2010 UN report, more than 80% of the world's fish stocks were either fully or over exploited. That's why we're developing responsible sources so you can buy more sustainable fish and sustainable seafood. It means you'll find all your favourites plus tasty alternatives like megrim and coley on our fresh counters instore.

Sustainable Fishing

Look out for the MSC label on pack next time you're instore. It provides an independent guide to sustainable fish and tells you it's from a certified fishery. We're the largest stockist of MSC fish in the UK, so why not spread your choices across a few types?

Why not try something different?

You may be pleased to know that three of our most popular fish (cod, haddock and salmon) are now 'green' rated for sustainability. This means they're all sourced responsibly. We are working hard to upgrade  our warm water prawns and yellow fin tuna to green status so you've got a wider choice of sustainable seafood.

You can also buy delicious alternatives to the most popular fish varieties from us. Why not give coley, pollock or dab a go next time you're shopping?

  • All our fresh and frozen haddock and Atlantic cod is line-caught, from responsibly managed fisheries in Iceland and Norway.
  • All our canned tuna, including the tuna in our sandwiches, sushi and ready meals, is caught using pole and line.
  • Greenpeace rated us number one for canned tuna sourcing in 2008 and again in 2011.

All our yellow fin tuna is line-caught.

Sustainable Fish

Our by Sainsbury’s Fish Fingers are only made with fish fillets, not parts like some brands use. The fish is caught from healthy stocks in the North East Atlantic.
